“Hi, my name is Macey and I am 9 years old and I have Cancer”. These are the words of my daughter, Macey, when she spoke on June 9th at a Make-A-Wish golf tournament dinner. She continued on with her speech explaining what her treatment was like for her. Then she went on and talked about her Make-A-Wish, which was a Disney cruise. As she was wrapping up, she pointed out that her cancer is back but she is confident that God is healing her. She stated, “The relapse tumor was on a CT that was done and then 6 days later, on an MRI it was gone, …it’s a miracle!!!” she said. Then in closing she said, “God has a special plan for me, so look out world cause here I come!!”
No fear! It’s funny if you think about that statement, “Look out world, here I come.” Why is it that this 9-year-old little girl can make such bold proclamations? I think that she has been given a gift from God. She has been given the eyes and the heart and soul of someone who has seen far more than any of us adults have. I also think that when that insight and knowledge blends with her innocence, it produces pure strength.
We are all so infested with junk from our lives because they are filled with clutter, stress, anxiety and worry. We get so wrapped up in all of the miniscule issues of day-to-day living that we miss the opportunity to have this pure, innocent approach to life.
Since I have been dealt the hand of caring for my sweet little princess cancer warrior, I have found that all of the worries of my grown up life have become very small. I have recognized that the little things are so much more important.
We only walk down this road one time. I wish that my daughter didn’t have to suffer the way she does. I wish she didn’t have to know the things she does. I wish she didn’t have to have the risk of losing her own life as a result of this cancer beast that dwells within her. But I do know one thing; I am a better husband, father and man having had this experience. I love my wife. I love my kids. I love my life. Most of all, I love God!
